The indictment of Dr. David Thomas, a Louisville anesthesiologist, on charges of writing OxyContin and hydrocodone prescriptions in exchange for remodeling work on his rental properties, should remind everybody, one more time, that drug abuse can't be explained by aggressive marketing. Back in 2001, Rep. Hal Rogers, R-5th District, threatened an investigation of how Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, marketed and promoted the powerful painkiller. When Dr. Paul Goldenheim defended his company and its efforts to combat abuse of the drug, Mr. Rogers dismissed him with, "Oh, give me a break!'' .
